Embracing Mistakes And Learning From Setbacks: growth in the design journey

Whether you’re just starting as a designer or have been at it for years, one universal truth stands strong: mistakes and setbacks are not roadblocks; they are stepping stones. BUT we also know that doesn’t make things easier when you’re in it. In this guide, we’ll explore how shifting your mindset and embracing these challenges can lead to remarkable growth in your design process.

the beauty of imperfection

In the world of crafting, there’s a common misconception that experienced designers have it all figured out, and that their creations are flawless from start to finish. But the reality is quite different. Every designer, regardless of their skill level, encounters missteps, skipped stitches, and moments of frustration. These imperfections are not signs of failure but rather badges of tenacity and evidence of a designer honing their skills.

learning through mistakes

Every mistake can become a lesson waiting to be uncovered. All you have to do is shift your mindset. When a stitch goes awry or a pattern doesn’t quite turn out as planned, take a step back and see it as an opportunity. Perhaps it’s a chance to deepen your understanding of a particular technique. It could even be a doorway to a new design element. Each mistake is a building block for your expertise.

When a pattern doesn’t work out as planned, don’t be afraid to experiment, tweak, and transform it into something entirely new. This flexibility and willingness to pivot can lead to unexpected and beautiful outcomes.

Give yourself the grace to develop your point of view and challenge your skills as you grow as a designer. It will likely become your favorite part of the process and feed your creativity.

Our co-founder Michele Costa knows this point to be true.

“My entire career as a designer started as a mistake. I was trying to make a bag and could not for the life of me follow the poorly written pattern I had gotten. I ended up with an ugly hat that did not at all resemble a bag. That sparked me to think, ‘Well how can I make this ugly hat a cool hat?’ And thus the road began to asking questions, learning new skills and designing things.”

Sometimes mistakes can lead to your greatest achievements!

perseverance in the face of setbacks

Setbacks can be disheartening, especially when you’ve invested time and energy into a project only to realize it needs to be undone and redone. The ability to persevere through setbacks is a testament to your dedication and passion for your craft. How can you make this process smoother in the future? You might want to consider hiring a sample maker to do the physical stitching of your patterns. Maybe you begin your stitching process by having a tech editor read through your drafts BEFORE you make your sample.

“When I look back on the work I did ten years ago, sure, I can see the mistakes.  I can only see them now, after having learned through experience.

If I spent all my time fixing the “mistakes” I’ve made I wouldn’t have ever put anything out there. At some point, one has to make the decision to keep moving on to new ideas.”

Whatever process you choose should be based on the learnings from previous setbacks.

community and support

One of the greatest strengths of the stitchwear community is the support and camaraderie among fellow designers. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help or advice when you encounter challenges.

Chances are the challenges you are facing have been faced by designers who have come before you. They have worked through these same roadblocks and have come out on the other side. Don’t be afraid to reach out to the designers you admire to cultivate a community for yourself.

My advice is to not be afraid to ask for help or advice from people they look up to. Most people in creative businesses are generous with their knowledge. I’d also say not to kick yourself too hard when you mess up: be honest and straightforward, apologize sincerely, learn from the experience, and move on. We’ve all made big and small mistakes and gotten past them.”

Sharing your experiences and learning from others can accelerate your growth as a designer

embrace the journey

In your journey as a knit or crochet designer, remember that growth is not a linear path. It’s a series of twists and turns, highs and lows, mistakes, and triumphs. Embracing mistakes and setbacks is not a sign of weakness but a testament to your determination to evolve and create.

Each stitch you drop, design you scrap, and every setback you face is an opportunity to learn, innovate, and ultimately, grow.
